Interpreting Maps

Geographers describe where things are by these three things scale, space, and connections. A Map Scale is a ratio which compares a measurement on a map to the actual distance between locations identified on the map. Projection is an estimate of a future amount. Meridian is a circle of constant longitude passing through a given place on the earth's surface and the terrestrial poles. The Longitude of a place is its distance to the west or east of a line passing through Greenwich, England. Parallel is side by side and having the same distance continuously between them. The Latitude of a place is its distance from the equator. Prime Meridian is the line of longitude, corresponding to zero degrees and passing through Greenwich, England, from which all the other lines of longitude are calculated. The role of map scaleing is how big the object is on the map and how big it actually is on earth.  The role of map reading is that it can help you find where you are going when you are traveling .  Three types of map projections are cylindrical, conic, and azimuthal.
