Spartans 

The fighting Spartans: 


  • Spartan boys trained from the time they were seven. 
  • Spartans were known for their toughness and ruthlessness. 
  • Greeks were warlike people like the Spartans. 
Athens power:
  • Their most affective weapon was the Trireme.
  • The Trireme was the fastest ship at the time. 
  • The Trireme rowed by up to 170 men on three levels of the ship.
  • The Trireme was used as a battering ram also.
Phalanx:
  • Phalanx is a formation of warriors that were in lines as a group and getting ready to attack their enemies.
  • Phalanx people each had a spear and a shield.
  • In the Phalanx if you were in the front you had to put your spear out and your shield up.
Persian War:
  • The Persian war was between the Persian Empire .V.S. Greece.
  • Greece had know chance because the Persian Empire was huge and Greece was small.
Dates to know:
  • 490 BC: Persian fleet attacks Marathon, but loses.
  • 480 BC: Greeks abandon Athens to fight Persia at sea, winning at Straits of Salamis.
  • Pheidippides ran to Athens that is why it is called a Marathon today.
