Roman Government vs. Modern Day Government

  • A.  Compare and contrast the government of ancient Rome with the government of the modern-day United States.

In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting the Roman government with the Modern day government. In some ways they are alike and in others very different. In my opinion, I think that the Roman government proves to be more barbaric and strict in their ways than today's modern government.

The Roman government was ruled by the Roman Republic for five hundred years. This was a form of government that allowed people to elect officials. Their government still had a constitution and laws like every regular government. Rome came up with many of the ideas and structures that became the basis for modern democracies. The Roman government was very complicated because it had so much leaders and councils. In Rome the elected officials were called Magistrates. Magistrates had different rankings on how high up in power they are.

The Modern day government is ran as a democracy. This means that it is a system of government by the whole population or all eligible members of a state,  ran typically through elected representatives. Modern day government comprises of several branches which include the Legislative branch. This branch makes up Congress, House of Representatives, and the Senate. The Executive branch is made up of the President, Vice President, and Cabinet. Then there is the Judicial branch which consist of relationships between state and Federal court. In the United States of America we believe that someone is innocent until proven guilty by the court of law or a court of their peers.

There are many similarities between the Roman government and Modern Day government. Such as both governments were based on having a constitution which serves as a list of laws their citizens must live by. Both governments also have elected officials. The Roman government was different in that they had many barbaric rituals for instance having slaves fight to the death for entertainment purposes. The Roman government could chose to appoint a dictator which would make decisions for the Roman Empire which is not like our modern day democracy.

In closing, there are many similarities as there are contrasts in these both types of governments. Both serve a purpose which is to bring order to the people.  Some of the ways that these governments work can be effective in keeping order and making sure people have laws to live by.  This is important because with out laws there would be anarchy.
