1. How many people lost their lives from the civil war in Sudan?
Two million people lost their lives from the civil war.
2. Who are the Lost Boys?
The Lost Boys are this group of 20,000 boys of the Nuer and Dinka ethnic groups. These boys where displaced into this bad area where many were killed.
3. What two things started the civil war in Sudan?
Two things that started the Civil War in Sudan was that it got sparked when the military regime tried to impose sharia law as part of its overall policy to all of Sudan.
4. Who was fighting in the war?
North and South Sudan.
5. What hardships did the boys face on their journey to Ethiopia?
6.What happened to the refugee camp at Ethiopia?
It was shut down by the new government.
7. How many years did the Lost Boys walk total after the attacks on the villages?
Six to seven years.

In what ways to the boys eat differently than average Americans?
They smash crackers up and put them in milk and they would eat with their hands its like eating soup in a cup.
What was John’s job at the age of 13?
He had to bury the children that died.
How does sleeping in America compare to sleeping at the refugee camp?
In America they slept on comfortable thick mattresses and at the camp they had to sleep on the ground.
How many months of assistance does the government provide? What happens after that time?
The government provides three months assistance for what he has to pay. Then they have to work and repay the government.
What holiday traditions do the boys want to know the meaning of?
The Christmas tree and who Santa is.
What is John scared of doing? Why?
Ice skating because he is so tall.
What are John’s jobs?
Gasket factory and McDonalds.
What is Daniel’s job?
He processes checks at a bank.
Why does Daniel think life in America is tough?
People have different schedules and do not have any time to spend with family.
What do the boys think of Americans?
They are unfriendly and unwelcoming at the same time.
Why do merchants file a complain with the police?
They feel intimidated by the boys entering their stores in large groups.
How are the lost boys feeling 1 year in America?
They are lonely.
Reflection Questions
1. What have you learned about Dinka culture?
I learned that Dinka culture has people always sticking together. They also did dances and sang in a circle to worship there culture.
2. What markers from the film are representative of Dinka culture? Of American culture?
Music, dance, food, clothing, and language.
3. What values do the Lost Boys hold? How do those values compare with your own?
The values of the lost boys is that they have and bring hope to the people held in the camps by education and family. There values compare to my values because I care for my family and friends and want the best for them. Also I care about my education so I don't have to stay in the same place forever.
4. What questions and fears do the Lost Boys have about life in the U.S.?
That people are lazy and do not like to work, that they will be given bad jobs.
5. What questions and fears would you have if you were moving to a new place?
I would wonder where to go and how to do stuff because I might not know how.
6. What differences do you see between Dinka culture and American culture?
Dinka culture is one based culture where we celebrate one.
7.What are some of the challenges the Lost Boys encounter?
Eating and travel is hard for the boys.
8. How do they adapt to life in the United States (think in terms of both assimilation and acculturation?
They get a tv, new cloths, normal food, and pay bills to be like other people.
9.How do you think you would adapt to life in a new country?
I would not adapt well because life is hard.
10. A benefit of this documentary lies in the opportunity to view our own (American) culture through the eyes of the Dinka. What aspects of our culture, which we may or may not take for granted, could potentially make immigrants feel marginalized or not a part of the American culture?
For example like a Christian school where immigrant won't get in because where they are from.
11. What scene(s) or ideas presented in the film stood out to you? Why?
When they had to eat stuff they didn't know what it was and mash it with a hammer. Also when they were very successful with getting an education and job.
12. Was there anything that surprised you as you watched the film? Detail one thing that you took away from the film study.
I wasn't surprised by anything because I expected them to act differently from us cause they never had any special privileges like us and living a good life.
