Vocabulary Definitions

1. Republic- A republic is a form of government in which power rests with citizens who have the right  to vote for their leaders. 

2. Patrician- the wealthy landowners who held most of the power. 

3. Plebeian-  the common farmers, artisans, and merchants who made up the majority of the population. 

4. Tribune-  Tribunes protected the rights of the plebeians from unfair acts of patrician officials. 

5. Consul- Like kings, they commanded the army and directed the government. 

6. Senate- was the aristocratic branch of Romes government.

7. Dictator- a leader who has absolute power to make laws and command the army. 

8. Legion- Roman soldiers were organized into large military units called legions. 

9. Punic Wars- Started between 264 and 146 B.C. Rome and Carthage went to war.

10. Hannibal- The mastermind behind the war was a 29 year old Carthaginian general named Hannibal.
