Warring City- States
- polis- fundamental political unit that is made up of a city and the surrounding countryside.
- monarchy- rule by a single person like a king in Greece.
- aristocracy- rule by a small group of noble, very rich, landowning families.
- oligarchy- wealthy groups, dissatisfied with aristocratic rule, who seized power, often comes with military help.
- tyrant- powerful individual who seized control by appealing to the common people for support.
- During the seventh and sixth centuries BCE the Aristocrats ran the show in most of Greece.
- No women except for the entertainment.
- Hoplites were armed soldiers
- Greek meaning of tyrant is someone who simply seized power.
- The modern meaning of a tyrant is an abusive or oppressive ruler.
- Death is the punishments for many crimes
- If you owed debt to someone they could make you their slave.
- Solon outlaws debt slavery.
- All Athenian citizens can now speak at the assemblies.
- Any citizen can press charges against wrongdoers.
